Hi. I Am America
Hi. I am America.
and I'm seventeen.
I'm nineteen. I'm forty. I'm eighty-three.
But, I'm really seventeen.
I don't approve of authority.
I do not authorize it.
I will follow no leader who is not seventeen.
When that one guy gets another piercing,
I must padlock the fleshy sensitive part of my chest.
I make statements.
I don't have discourse.
I mock and laugh at the wise.
Listening to the old is stupid.
I'm America. I'm seventeen.
I pledge no real allegiance.
I pay no respect to a president. Most presidents are too old.
I would follow a leader like me.
One who makes up his own rules.
Follows his heart.
But listen to one who goes by the book?
Forget it.
Have you seen who wrote "the book?"
Old!
I watch TV.
And I understand it all.
What they tell me is true.
Because they are seventeen.
I have no reason to base my beliefs,
My politics, my theology,
On principle.
I have a stronger foundation.
I have signed up with my brothers and my sisters,
To carry the banner of 'Passion' and of 'Feelings.'
My brothers and my sisters,
All seventeen.
My mom, forty-four. My dad, forty-eight.
Me, twenty-three.
But we're all really seventeen.
I'm America.
I'm seventeen.
and I'm seventeen.
